Ebusiness Strategy.

Why Conduct an Ebusiness Strategy?

It is important to understand what the company’s eBusiness expectations are before implementing eBusiness solutions. Once the expectations are known, the company can begin to plan its eBusiness strategy. A company may benefit by conducting an eBusiness Strategy project to plan its eBusiness future. The basis for an effective eBusiness strategy is an understanding of the company’s business goals – not its eBusiness goals. eBusiness is a way to facilitate improvements in a company’s processes, in addition to allowing a company to expand market penetration, geographical markets, etc. Therefore, the processes that will be integrated into the eBusiness infrastructure must be both known and ready for integration. To implement eBusiness without understanding the company’s business goals or processes is likely to lead to eBusiness failure.

The goal of an eBusiness strategy is to help the company answer the following questions:
  • What are the priorities and their justifications?
  • What type of eBusiness applications make sense and why?
  • What are the implementation options and challenges for the high priority applications?
  • What is the long-term plan and timeline for implementing the applications?

As the strategy project progresses, it is important to re-evaluate the plan being developed. It is common to lose focus on the business goals of the project and focus instead on potential technology implementation. Continue validating whether the company’s eBusiness goals focus on the company’s business needs. One of the primary reasons to conduct an eBusiness strategy before beginning implementation is to minimize the project risks. By performing the strategy first, the company is more likely to pursue eBusiness projects that:
  • Maintain focus on the business goals
  • Understand existing processes and include appropriate links
  • Ensure the company’s infrastructure is ready for the change eBusiness will bring.
Finally, it is important to note that an eBusiness strategy is not a one-time event. It is an iterative process. Much like long-range business planning, eBusiness plans must be re-evaluated and adjusted on a regular basis. An ebusiness strategy is different from a ecommerce strategy in many aspects. There are three main areas on which to focus the eBusiness strategy:
